I'd like to share a story from my life.
It was a great party. Nothing wild, just a group of people who were having a good time. I had just grabbed something to drink, and I was standing to one side, when a young man caught my eye. When he did, I could see that instant spark of recognition. His face lit up and he immediately began working his way through the crowd. He was about six feet, blond hair, couldn't have been more than 19 or 20. When he grabbed my hand, the words just kind of tumbled out of him.
"I want to thank you for changing my life", he said. "I heard you speak, and you told a story out of the Bible. You used Psalm 23, about the shepherd and the sheep. A little while later, they told me I had cancer. I can't tell you how many times I went over your words during all the chemo and everything that I went through. I just want to thank you again. Your talk helped me get through the worst time in my life."
Wow. I never get tired of hearing things like that. That's why I take so long to study, prepare and do a good job presenting my ideas. I want my words, what I say, to count. I want to see someone's life changed for the better.
I asked him when he had heard me speak, because I hadn't used that illustration in a long time. "Oh," he said, "that was over two years ago, and I can still remember it like it was yesterday."
Two years! What an incredible feeling that gave me; first that my words had helped someone in a difficult time; second that he had remembered what I had said years ago.
You may not want to speak to a crowd. That's O.K. The same skills I used that day, you can use with just one other person to persuade, influence, and convince.
